Staining the Deck

I had the distinct pleasure of staining my deck last week. Between the smell of the stain, the perspiration in sweltering heat, and the muscle strains of lower back I had time to reflect on the entire process and its meaning.
Protection is what it is all about. I have seen decks, as you no doubt have also, that have been neglected and left unstained over the years. The weather is not kind to the wood left untreated.
In my mind as the stain was being applied “theological thoughts” kept running through my brain. The power of God protects my soul from the weather of life. Listen to what Peter says:
“…Through faith we are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time” [1 Peter 1:5].
What a comfort to know that my soul is not left bare to the wind and weather of life, and to the damaging effect of Satan’s influence. God’s power shields us and protects us. It would be so easy if staining the deck was a one time event. But every so often the entire process has to be repeated so that protection remains.
We have to constantly monitor our souls and make sure that we are allowing God’s power to protect us. Pray and meditate. Pour out the stain and apply it. Sweep and hammer down loose nails. Let the Lord cleanse your heart and nail down your convictions of faith. Allow Him to apply the coating of his power to protect you!
